PRESS BACKGROUNDER

Since its founding in 1991, the Institute for Private Investors (IPI) has provided innovative educational and networking resources to families with substantial assets – and their advisors – all within a safe harbor for the confidential exchange of information.

Private investors join IPI to become more sophisticated stewards of their wealth and more discriminating purchasers of financial services. At present more than 1,100 private investors along with 200 professional firms are members, with four out of five member families overseeing assets of US$50 million or more. In aggregate the 367 member families, from 15 countries and 40 states, oversee in excess of US$50 billion.

Because IPI does not endorse any investment services, strategies or managers, the program content is academic, not promotional. Educational and networking activities are held in cities across the U.S. and abroad. Five two-day forums are held annually for the private investor membership, in New York and California, with smaller special briefings and member roundtables held throughout the year.

Between these events the community of private investors stays in touch via a robust electronic community. Confidentiality and trust have been built over the years within this private group, where families freely ask one another about investments, request manager references or ask questions on wealth transfer or family office issues. On this password-protected section of IPI’s website, Memberlink®, members also listen to sessions, review handouts and discover other members’ asset allocations and returns.

Since 1999 IPI has collaborated with The Wharton School to offer a curriculum in Private Wealth Management. As of August 2007, 412 investors from 29 countries had graduated from the five-day residential program offered twice annually. In August 2008, IPI will launch a parallel Wealth Management program at Stanford with a similarly rigorous curriculum.

IPI is a resource worldwide for neutral investor education and derives 100% of its revenue from membership and educational fees.
